Sedgeport

Sedgeport is a small coastal port town in Graymarsh County, located at the mouth of the River Alder. It serves as the administrative seat of the Graymarsh Coastal District and functions as a regional hub for fishing, ship repair, and light industry. The harbor includes working quays, a marina, and a protective breakwater that shelters vessels of various sizes.

The town sits on tidal flats and salt marshes, with the historic core on slightly higher ground above the harbor. Residential areas extend toward the river and marsh, while wetlands nearby support birdlife and provide spaces for walking trails and seasonal tourism.

Founded as a medieval fishing hamlet, Sedgeport expanded with harbor improvements and timber trade in the early modern period. A lighthouse and the Old Wharf preserve the town’s maritime heritage, while later industrial additions diversified its economy.

Today the economy centers on fishing and seafood processing, boat maintenance, timber products, and coastal tourism. Markets sell local shellfish, produce, and crafts, while the port services small cargo and recreational traffic.

Transportation connections include a regional road network and a rural rail line to larger centers. A passenger ferry links Sedgeport with Gullmere Island, and the harbor accommodates fishing boats, ferries, and leisure craft.

The population is small and predominantly residential, with an estimated 6,500 inhabitants. The community supports cultural events such as the annual Tide Festival and maintains a small maritime museum and lighthouse as focal points of local identity.
