Sebességváltók, commonly known as gearboxes or transmissions, are mechanical devices that transmit rotational power from a source, such as an engine, to a driven component. Their primary function is to alter the speed and torque of the rotating input to match the requirements of the output. This is achieved through a system of gears of varying sizes. By engaging different combinations of these gears, the gear ratio can be changed, thereby modifying the output speed and torque.

The most common type of gearbox is found in vehicles, where it allows the engine to operate within its optimal speed range regardless of the vehicle's speed. This is crucial because engines produce their most efficient power at specific revolutions per minute (RPM). A lower gear ratio provides higher torque, which is needed for starting from a standstill or climbing inclines, but results in lower speeds. Conversely, a higher gear ratio offers lower torque but allows for higher speeds with less engine strain.

Gearboxes can be broadly categorized into manual and automatic types. Manual gearboxes require the driver to manually select gears using a clutch pedal and gear lever. Automatic gearboxes, on the other hand, select gears automatically based on driving conditions, engine speed, and vehicle load, eliminating the need for driver intervention. Other types of transmissions exist, including continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) which offer an infinite range of gear ratios, and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) which combine elements of both manual and automatic systems for rapid gear changes. Gearboxes are essential components in many machines beyond vehicles, including industrial equipment, robots, and wind turbines, where precise control over speed and torque is required.
