Sebacic

Sebacic acid, also called decanedioic acid, is a dicarboxylic acid with the chemical formula C10H18O4. It consists of a ten-carbon aliphatic chain bearing carboxyl groups at both ends (HOOC-(CH2)8-COOH). The compound occurs in trace amounts in castor oil and is produced commercially by the oxidative degradation of ricinoleic acid derived from castor oil, followed by purification to isolate sebacic acid. The process can yield other diacids such as azelaic and suberic acids, which are separated during purification.

Sebacic acid is a versatile monomer used in the production of polyamides, polyesters, and plasticizers. It is a key component in nylon-6,10, formed from hexamethylenediamine and sebacic acid, as well as in specialty polymers and resins derived from castor oil. Its esters, known as sebacates, are widely used as plasticizers to improve flexibility and processability of polymers, including PVC and polyurethane formulations. Sebacic acid and sebacates also find applications in coatings, lubricants, and biodegradable polymer systems.

In terms of physical properties, sebacic acid is a white to off-white crystalline solid with limited water solubility and a relatively high melting point, reflecting its long hydrocarbon chain and two terminal carboxyl groups. It is handled as a chemical intermediate in industrial settings, with standard safety practices to minimize exposure to dust and avoid skin or eye contact.
