Scintillointimettereitä, often translated as scintillators or scintillation counters, are devices used to detect and measure ionizing radiation. They work by exploiting the phenomenon of scintillation, where certain materials emit light when struck by energetic particles or photons. This emitted light is then detected by a photosensitive device, such as a photomultiplier tube or a photodiode, which converts the light into an electrical signal. The intensity and duration of the light pulse are related to the energy and type of radiation that caused the scintillation.

The scintillating material, or scintillator, is the core component of the detector. Common scintillators include inorganic crystals like sodium iodide activated with thallium (NaI(Tl)) and organic materials such as plastic scintillators or liquid scintillators. The choice of scintillator depends on the application and the type of radiation being detected. For instance, NaI(Tl) is widely used for gamma ray detection due to its high density and light output, while plastic scintillators are often preferred for beta particle detection and for large-area detectors due to their ease of fabrication and cost-effectiveness.

The electrical signal generated by the photodetector is processed by associated electronics. This processing can involve amplification, pulse shaping, and energy discrimination, allowing for the counting of radiation events, measurement of their energy, and determination of the rate of radiation incidence.
