Schulwegkonzept

A Schulwegkonzept is a structured plan used in German-speaking regions to improve safety and access for schoolchildren traveling to and from school, primarily on foot or by bike. It is developed by a school together with local authorities, police, and parent representatives to reduce traffic risks on routes used by students and to support independent, sustainable mobility.

An initial analysis identifies the typical routes, dangerous intersections, traffic volumes, and hazards. Based on this risk assessment, measures are proposed: physical improvements such as crosswalks, speed reductions (Tempo 30 zones), traffic-calmed streets; school zone signs; secure bicycle facilities; improved lighting; escort services by trained volunteers (Schulweghelfer) or school staff; and supervised crossing areas during peak times. The concept also includes education for students, information for families, and route planning with maps or guidance to encourage safe travel choices.

Implementation typically involves collaboration among schools, local authorities, police, and parent associations, followed by funding arrangements and a phased rollout. A Schulwegkonzept is usually reviewed annually and updated to reflect changes in routes, traffic conditions, or school locations. Schools commonly monitor outcomes through feedback from families and with incident data to revise the plan as needed.

The aim is to reduce accidents, promote physical activity and independent mobility, and lessen traffic near schools. By coordinating infrastructure, supervision, and education, Schulwegkonzepte seek to create safer, more sustainable ways for students to travel to school.
