Schrottwerke

Schrottwerke are industrial facilities dedicated to the collection, processing, and recycling of metal scrap into usable raw materials. They handle ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, sorting by grade and contamination, shredding, baling, and preparing materials for smelting or direct reuse in foundries and steelworks.

History of Schrottwerke dates back to early steelmaking, but specialized scrap plants expanded in the 20th century with the adoption of electric arc furnaces, advanced shredding equipment, and improved sorting technologies, enabling large-scale recycling and supply of secondary metals.

Process and operations typically involve receiving scrap, sorting and decontaminating it, and pre-processing the material. Ferrous scrap is often separated magnetically, while non-ferrous scrap is sorted by optical or eddy-current methods. The prepared scrap is melted in electric arc or induction furnaces, followed by refining and alloying to produce steel, copper alloys, aluminium alloys, or other products. Impurities are removed, and by-products such as slag and dross are treated for recovery or proper disposal. The resulting metal ingots, billets, or cast products are then sold to downstream users or integrated into rolling mills.

Environment and regulation: Schrottwerke contribute to the circular economy by recovering metals and reducing energy use and mining impact compared with primary production. They are subject to national and regional environmental, health and safety regulations, with standards governing emissions, waste management, and worker protection. Collaboration with waste management authorities and industry groups helps ensure compliance and ongoing improvements in efficiency and material recovery.
