A Schlüsselschalter, or key switch, is an electrical switch operated by a key. The key serves as a mechanical actuator, ensuring that only authorized individuals can operate the switch. This is achieved because the key's unique shape or coding allows it to engage with the switch mechanism, typically by turning it to a specific position. When the correct key is inserted and turned, it completes or breaks an electrical circuit.

Key switches are commonly used in security systems, industrial control panels, and access control devices. They provide a physical and visual deterrent against unauthorized access or operation. The presence of a key lock signifies that a higher level of security is required compared to a standard toggle or push-button switch. Different types of key switches exist, varying in the number of positions they offer, the complexity of the key mechanism, and the electrical contacts they control. Some may have only two positions, on and off, while others can offer multiple states. The removal of the key can also be designed to lock the switch in its current position, preventing accidental changes. This feature enhances safety and reliability in critical applications.
