Schistosomatozy

Schistosomatozy, also known as schistosomiasis, is a parasitic disease caused by flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. It is primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated freshwater, where the worms' larvae (cerariae) penetrate the skin. The most common species involved in human infections are Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma haematobium, and Schistosoma japonicum.

The disease can cause a range of symptoms, including skin rashes, fever, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it can lead to chronic liver disease, portal hypertension, and bladder cancer. Schistosomatozy is a significant public health issue in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.

Diagnosis typically involves detecting the presence of the parasite's eggs in stool or urine samples. Treatment options include praziquantel, an anthelmintic drug that kills the adult worms, and sometimes surgical interventions for severe cases. Prevention strategies focus on improving sanitation, providing access to clean water, and educating the public about the disease's transmission.
