Schildplaat

A schildplaat, also known as a shield plate, is a type of armor used primarily in the medieval period, particularly in Europe. It was a key component of the transition from chainmail to more advanced forms of plate armor. Schildplaat refers specifically to the metal plates that were riveted or sewn onto a padded or leather base, creating a hybrid form of armor that offered enhanced protection compared to traditional chainmail alone.

The schildplaat was commonly used in the 14th and early 15th centuries, becoming particularly popular during the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453). These plates were often made from steel and were designed to cover vulnerable areas of the body, such as the shoulders, arms, chest, and legs. They were typically worn over a padded or quilted garment, known as a gambeson, which provided additional cushioning and protection against impacts.

Schildplaat armor was highly versatile and could be customized to fit different body types. The plates were often connected by straps, rivets, or lacing, allowing for a degree of flexibility while maintaining structural integrity. This type of armor was favored by knights and soldiers due to its balance of mobility and protection, making it suitable for both mounted and foot combat.

Over time, as metallurgy improved and the need for lighter yet stronger armor grew, the schildplaat evolved into more integrated forms of plate armor, such as the hauberk and later the full suit of plate. By the late 15th century, the schildplaat had largely been replaced by more cohesive and fully articulated plate armor designs, marking a significant advancement in medieval military technology.
