Schaumsystemen, often translated as "foam systems," refers to a class of fire suppression systems that utilize foam to extinguish fires. These systems are particularly effective on Class B fires, which involve flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, and alcohol. The foam acts by separating the fuel surface from the oxygen supply, cooling the fuel, and preventing the release of flammable vapors.

There are several types of foam concentrates used in these systems, including aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), fluoroprotein foam, and alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam (AR-AFFF). The choice of foam depends on the specific type of flammable liquid involved. For instance, AR-AFFF is designed to suppress fires involving polar solvents that can break down conventional foams.

Schaumsystemen are commonly found in locations where flammable liquids are stored or handled, such as airports, fuel storage depots, chemical plants, and aircraft hangars. The systems can be deployed in various ways, including fixed systems with permanently installed piping and nozzles, or portable systems like foam extinguishers. The application method is crucial for effective fire suppression, with options like low-expansion, medium-expansion, and high-expansion foam generation, each suited for different fire scenarios and room volumes.
