Schachtköpfe, German for "shaft heads," refers to the uppermost structures of mining shafts. These essential components are crucial for the safe and efficient operation of underground mines. They typically house the winding engine, which controls the movement of the cage or skip used to transport personnel, materials, and extracted ore. The winding engine is powered by electricity or steam and is connected to the shaft by a winding rope.
The Schachtkopf also includes the shaft tower or headframe, a tall structure that supports the winding pulley.
