Savcsökkentésre, or desulfurization, refers to processes that remove sulfur compounds from various substances. This is a crucial step in environmental protection and industrial efficiency.

In the context of energy production, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is widely employed in power plants that burn fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil. These fuels contain sulfur, which, when combusted, produces sulfur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a major air pollutant contributing to acid rain and respiratory problems. FGD systems, such as wet scrubbers or dry scrubbers, chemically react with SO2 to form solid byproducts like calcium sulfate (gypsum), which can then be disposed of or reused.

Another significant application of savcsökkentésre is in the petroleum industry. Crude oil often contains sulfur compounds that must be removed before refining. This process, known as hydrodesulfurization, uses hydrogen gas and catalysts at high temperatures and pressures to convert sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2S is then separated and often converted into elemental sulfur, a valuable commodity. Removing sulfur from fuels not only reduces harmful emissions when burned but also prevents catalyst poisoning in refining processes and improves fuel quality.

Desulfurization is performed during the smelting and refining stages to ensure the quality and integrity of the final metal products.
