Sassenage

Sassenage is a commune in the Isère department of southeastern France, situated on the western edge of the Grenoble plain. It lies approximately ten kilometres west of Grenoble, within the urbanised area that forms part of the Grenoble-Alpes Métropole.

The municipality occupies a total area of about 14 square kilometres, characterised by a mix of flat agricultural land and gently rising foothills of the French Alps. The Sassenage River, a tributary of the Isère, flows through the town, providing both scenic value and irrigation for local farmland. The climate is temperate mountain, with warm summers and snowy winters that support diverse horticultural activities.

Sassenage’s documented history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was a small agrarian settlement overlooking the valley. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly after the construction of the railway linking Grenoble to Chambéry, which fostered trade and commuting. In recent decades, the population has increased steadily, reflecting its appeal as a residential area for workers in Grenoble.

Tourism is also notable; visitors are attracted to the town’s picturesque streets, historic chapels, and proximity to ski resorts in the Brévières.

The road network is well maintained, connecting Sassenage to major highways and neighboring communes.
