Sarments

Sarments are the dried, woody stems of grapevines. After the harvest, grapevines are pruned, and the cut stems are typically left to dry on the ground before being collected. These dried stems are primarily composed of lignified cellulose and have a high tannin content.

Historically, sarments served several purposes in viticulture and rural life. They were a common fuel source for fires, providing a consistent and readily available combustible material. Their woody nature also made them useful for various craft purposes, such as weaving into baskets or other utilitarian items. In some regions, they were used as a natural fertilizer, decomposed and returned to the soil to improve its structure and nutrient content.

The use of sarments as fuel is particularly notable. They burn with a distinct aroma and a relatively high heat output, making them an efficient option for cooking and heating in areas where other fuel sources were scarce. This practice contributed to the circular economy of traditional agricultural systems, where waste products were repurposed. While modern agricultural practices and fuel availability have reduced their widespread use as fuel, sarments remain an identifiable byproduct of viticulture. They are sometimes collected and processed for specialized applications or left to decompose naturally in the vineyard.
