Sarawakians

Sarawakians are the people who inhabit or originate from the Malaysian state of Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo. Sarawak is known for its rich cultural diversity, and its population is comprised of various ethnic groups, each with its own distinct traditions, languages, and customs.

The largest indigenous groups in Sarawak include the Iban, who are historically known as sea-dayaks, and the Bidayuh and Orang Ulu communities, which encompass a multitude of smaller ethnic sub-groups such as the Kayan, Kenyah, Lun Bawang, and Penan. Alongside these indigenous peoples, there are significant Chinese and Malay populations, as well as smaller numbers of other ethnic communities.

The Iban are one of the most prominent groups, historically associated with longhouse living and intricate weaving. The Bidayuh, often referred to as land-dayaks, have diverse cultural practices depending on their specific sub-groups. The Orang Ulu represent a wide array of tribal groups from the interior regions, often recognized for their elaborate beadwork, tattoos, and music.

The Chinese community in Sarawak has a long history in the region, contributing significantly to trade and commerce, and have integrated various local customs into their own. The Malay community is also a vital part of Sarawak's fabric, with their own distinct cultural heritage and contributions.

This mosaic of ethnicities contributes to a vibrant cultural landscape in Sarawak, reflected in its festivals, cuisine, arts, and languages. Sarawakians generally share a sense of regional identity, often distinguishing themselves from other Malaysians due to Sarawak's unique history and cultural heritage. The official language is Malay, but English is widely spoken, and many indigenous languages are preserved and used within their respective communities.
