Santarém

Santarém is a city and municipality in central Portugal, and the seat of the Santarém District. It lies on the Tagus River, upstream of Lisbon, and forms part of the Ribatejo region. The historic centre sits on a hillside above the river and preserves a mix of medieval and later urban fabric.

The area has evidence of settlement dating to ancient times and was part of successive eras, including Roman and Moorish rule before being reconquered in the mid-12th century by Afonso Henriques. In the medieval and early modern periods, Santarém developed as an administrative and commercial center and remained an important royal town, with fortifications and religious monuments that reflect its strategic position along the Tagus.

Notable sights include the hilltop Porta do Sol along the old walls, the Church of Santa Maria da Graça, and other churches and civil buildings that display a blend of architectural styles from different periods.
