Santa Cruz is a city located in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. Situated on the northern edge of Monterey Bay, it is known for its scenic coastline, progressive culture, and vibrant arts community. The city has a population of approximately 62,000 residents, making it the largest municipality in the county. Santa Cruz is also part of the larger San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan region, though it maintains a distinct local identity.

The area was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people, who called the region *Tunay*, meaning "place of the redwoods." Spanish explorers arrived in the late 18th century, and the region was later settled by European Americans in the 19th century. The city was officially incorporated in 1866 and named after the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains, which were in turn named by Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in honor of the Feast of Saint Cruz (Holy Cross) in 1542.

Santa Cruz is renowned for its natural beauty, featuring redwood forests, beaches, and coastal cliffs. The city is home to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a historic amusement park that opened in 1907 and remains a popular tourist attraction. Santa Cruz also leads the state in renewable energy use, with a goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2020.
