Sangaste

Sangaste is a village in Valga County, Estonia. It is located approximately 30 kilometers north of the border with Latvia and 25 kilometers southwest of the county seat of Valga. The village is situated within the municipality of Otepää. Historically, Sangaste was the center of the Sangaste Parish.

The most prominent landmark in Sangaste is Sangaste Castle (Sangaste loss), a picturesque manor house built in the Gothic Revival style. It was constructed in the late 19th century for Count Friedrich Georg Magnus von Berg. The castle is known for its distinctive architecture and its park, which features a variety of tree species. The castle has undergone renovations and now serves as a tourist attraction and a venue for events.

The area around Sangaste is characterized by rolling hills and forests, typical of the Southern Estonian landscape. Agriculture has historically been an important economic activity in the region. The village itself is relatively small, with a local community that sustains its services. Sangaste is also known for its rye cultivation, with the Sangaste rye variety having gained international recognition.
