Sandhya

Sandhya refers to the twilight period in India, specifically the time just before sunrise and just after sunset. It is considered a sacred time in Hinduism and is often associated with prayer, meditation, and rituals. The word "Sandhya" itself is derived from the Sanskrit word "sandhi," meaning "junction" or "union," referring to the transition between day and night.

There are two distinct Sandhya periods each day. Prata Sandhya (morning twilight) occurs before sunrise, and Sāyā Sandhya (evening twilight) occurs after sunset. Some traditions also recognize Madhya Sandhya (midday twilight), though it is less commonly observed. During these times, many Hindus perform Sandhyavandanam, a ritualistic practice involving purification, mantra recitation, and offerings.

The significance of Sandhya lies in its association with the cyclical nature of time and the transition between different states of being. It is a time when the energies of the day and night are believed to merge, making it conducive for spiritual practices. Many believe that performing rituals during Sandhya amplifies their effectiveness and brings blessings. The visual beauty of the changing colors in the sky during twilight also contributes to its revered status.
