Sandals are a category of open-toed footwear that primarily consist of a flat or lightly cushioned sole held to the foot by straps or thongs. They are designed to leave most of the foot exposed, providing breathability and ease of wear in warm weather or casual settings.

Historically, sandals are among the oldest types of footwear, with archaeological finds dating back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Their simple construction made them inexpensive to manufacture and adaptable to hot climates; variations appeared across civilizations, often reflecting local materials and cultural preferences.

Modern sandals vary widely in materials and construction. Soles may be made from leather, rubber, EVA foam, cork, or other composites, while straps can be leather, fabric, plastic, or rubber. Fastening methods include thong between the toes, back straps, or multiple cross-strap designs. Some sandals are designed for water use or outdoor activity and incorporate quick-drying materials and rugged tread.

Common types include flip-flops or thongs, slide sandals, sport or hiking sandals with adjustable straps, gladiator-inspired sandals with multiple vertical straps, and espadrilles with rope or woven jute soles. Fashion-focused variants emphasize aesthetics and branding.

Foot health considerations include fit, arch support, and secure fastening. Ill-fitting sandals can cause blisters or slips, while minimal support may not be suitable for long walks or standing. For work or safety contexts, purpose-built protective footwear is preferred.

Sandals remain popular worldwide as casual summer wear and as fashion items, with ongoing evolution in materials, sustainability, and design features such as cushioned footbeds and ergonomic straps.
