Sandakan

Sandakan is a coastal city located in the Sandakan District of the Sandakan Division in Sabah, Malaysia. It is situated on the northeastern coast of Borneo. Historically, Sandakan served as the capital of British North Borneo for many years. The city is a major port and a significant economic hub for Sabah, with industries including timber, palm oil, and fishing.

One of Sandakan's most notable attractions is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for and prepared for a return to the wild. Nearby, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of the world's smallest bear species. The city is also a gateway to the Kinabatangan River, Sabah's second-longest river, renowned for its diverse wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and numerous bird species.

The Sandakan Memorial Park commemorates the Allied prisoners of war who died there during World War II, particularly the infamous Sandakan Death Marches.
