Samskipt

Samskipt is an Icelandic term that translates to "getting around" or "transportation." It generally refers to the system and methods of moving people and goods within Iceland. This encompasses a range of options, from private vehicles to public transport and specialized services.

The road network is a significant component of samskipt, particularly in more populated areas. The Ring Road, or Route 1, circumnavigates the island and connects many of its major towns and attractions. Outside of the Ring Road, many routes are unpaved, especially in the Highlands, requiring vehicles suited for rough terrain. Driving conditions can be challenging due to weather, including snow, ice, and strong winds, particularly during winter months.

Public transportation within Iceland is more limited than in many other countries. Bus services operate between towns and cities, with Strætó being the primary national bus company. These services are more frequent in the southwest region, where Reykjavík and its surrounding areas are located. Intercity bus travel is popular for tourists and locals who do not own a car.

For travel between more remote locations or for specific needs, specialized transport services exist. This can include taxis, private hire vehicles, and in some cases, shared rides arranged through online platforms. Ferry services are also crucial for reaching islands off the coast of mainland Iceland, such as the Westman Islands. Air travel is important for connecting distant parts of the country, with domestic flights operating between several towns and Reykjavík. Air Iceland and Eagle Air are key providers of these services.
