Samohlásek

Samohlásek is a traditional Czech folk musical instrument, primarily used in the regions of Moravia and Silesia. It belongs to the family of wind instruments and is characterized by its simple yet distinctive design. The name "samohlásek" translates roughly to "self-sounding" or "self-playing," referring to its unique method of producing sound without the need for a reed or mouthpiece.

The instrument typically consists of a cylindrical wooden body, often made from linden or poplar, with a conical bore. It features a single reed made from cane or other natural materials, attached to a mouthpiece that is inserted into the player’s mouth. The sound is produced by blowing air across the reed, causing it to vibrate. Samohlásek usually has six finger holes on the front and one thumb hole on the side, allowing the player to produce a range of notes.

Historically, the samohlásek was commonly played alongside other folk instruments such as the *dudák* (a type of bagpipe) or the *fidula* (a string instrument). It was often used in outdoor gatherings, festivals, and traditional celebrations, particularly in rural areas.
