The concept is common in Norwegian and other Scandinavian contexts, where a samlet edition may be published as multiple volumes and issued by university presses, national libraries, or major publishers. The name literally means “collected works.”

A samleverk typically aims to present authoritative texts and to provide scholarly apparatus. Contents can include the author’s major literary works, essays, letters, diaries, and sometimes previously unpublished manuscripts or early versions. Editors decide the scope and organization, which is often chronological, though some editions group pieces by genre or form.
