Salvestusettevõtted, or recording companies, are businesses that manage the production, distribution, and promotion of recorded music. They typically oversee the entire lifecycle of a recording from the initial session—often in studios owned or leased by the company—to marketing efforts and retail or digital sales. In addition to artists, these enterprises negotiate licensing agreements for publishing, manage royalties, and sometimes provide touring and merchandising support.

Historically, salvestusettevõtted rose to prominence in the early twentieth century as vinyl, tape, stereo, CD and digital formats changed how audiences accessed music. The 1950s and 1960s saw the dominance of major labels such as Atlantic, Columbia, Decca and EMI, which assembled large rosters of popular performers and controlled pressing plants and distribution networks. A shift occurred with the advent of compact disc and later streaming, leading many companies to pivot toward digital distribution and to outsource manufacturing. Major labels, often consolidated through mergers, now focus largely on A&R (artist and repertoire), brand management and global marketing. Concurrently, independent labels have grown, offering artists greater creative control, leaner marketing budgets, and flexible contract terms.

The business model of salvestusettevõtted usually involves upfront investment for recording costs, advances to artists, and a share of sales and licensing revenue. Advances are recoverable from future earnings, and artists often receive a small percentage of net profits after recouping costs. In the digital age, streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music provide new revenue streams, while licensing for films, commercials and video games remains a vital part of the income mix.

Regulatory frameworks in many jurisdictions govern royalty accounting, contract transparency and antitrust concerns. In the European Union, copyright directives and the Digital Single Market aim to harmonise licensing and maximize consumer access, while protecting artists' rights. As technology evolves, salvestusettevõtted face challenges such as piracy, changing consumption habits, and the need to adapt business practices to emerging formats.
