Saltbeständigkeit refers to the ability of a material or structure to withstand the damaging effects of salt. This is particularly important in environments where salt is present, such as coastal regions, areas treated with de-icing salts, or in industrial settings involving saline solutions. The presence of salts, especially chlorides, can accelerate corrosion processes in metals, cause expansion and cracking in porous materials like concrete and stone, and degrade various synthetic materials.

Different materials exhibit varying degrees of saltbeständigkeit. Metals like stainless steel and certain alloys are engineered for enhanced resistance to salt-induced corrosion. For concrete and stone, saltbeständigkeit is influenced by factors such as porosity, water absorption, and the presence of protective admixtures or coatings. In construction, materials with good saltbeständigkeit are chosen for foundations, bridges, pavements, and marine structures to ensure longevity and structural integrity.

The mechanisms of salt damage can include electrochemical corrosion, where salt acts as an electrolyte, and physical damage. For porous materials, the crystallization of salts within pores upon evaporation can generate significant internal stresses, leading to spalling and disintegration. Understanding and assessing saltbeständigkeit is crucial for material selection, design, and maintenance to prevent premature failure and ensure the service life of structures and products exposed to saline conditions. Testing methods are employed to evaluate a material's resistance to salt, often involving immersion or exposure to salt solutions under controlled conditions.
