Saltatorisch

Saltatorisch is an adjective describing processes that occur in leaps rather than gradually. In biology, it is most commonly used for saltatorische Reizleitung, the rapid conduction of nerve impulses along myelinated axons in which the electrical signal appears to hop from one node of Ranvier to the next.

Mechanism and meaning: In myelinated neurons, the axon is wrapped in a myelin sheath that insulates the interior and reduces current leakage. Action potentials are generated at the nodes of Ranvier, where voltage-gated sodium channels are concentrated. The depolarization at one node spreads quickly to the next, triggering a new action potential there. This leapfrogging of the signal between nodes makes conduction faster and more energy-efficient, because ion exchange occurs mainly at the nodes rather than along the entire axon.

Physiological implications: Saltatory conduction yields higher conduction velocities than continuous conduction in unmyelinated fibers. The speed is influenced by axon diameter and the degree of myelination; large myelinated fibers can transmit impulses at tens to hundreds of meters per second, while unmyelinated fibers are significantly slower. The concept helps explain rapid signaling in vertebrate nervous systems and underlies the efficiency of neural communication in many animals.

Other uses and etymology: The term derives from Latin saltare, “to leap.” Beyond neuroscience, saltatorisch can describe any jump-like or abrupt, leap-based process or movement, including metaphorical uses or references to hopping locomotion in certain species.
