Salasanaton is a term used to describe authentication methods that do not rely on traditional passwords. In practice, it refers to approaches that replace or augment passwords with cryptographic credentials, device-bound keys, or out-of-band verification, aiming to improve security and user convenience.

The core technologies behind passwordless authentication include WebAuthn (FIDO2) and related standards, which enable cryptographic credentials stored on a user’s device or on a physical security key. These credentials are typically unlocked with a local factor such as a biometric scan or a PIN. Many platforms also offer cross-device synchronization of credentials, allowing users to sign in from multiple devices. In addition to cryptographic methods, some passwordless options use alternatives like magic links, one-time codes delivered via email or SMS, or push-based approval workflows, though these may carry different security trade-offs.

Historically, passwordless concepts gained momentum in the mid-2010s and were reinforced by the work of the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to standardize secure, interoperable implementations. By the 2020s, major technology ecosystems began promoting passkeys and other passwordless experiences as a preferred default, with browser support and platform integration expanding significantly.

Advantages of passwordless authentication include reduced risk of phishing and password reuse, potential improvements in login speed, and simplified user management for organizations. Drawbacks or challenges include recovery after device loss, dependency on specific ecosystems or devices, potential vendor lock-in, and the need to ensure accessibility for all users. Ongoing adoption varies by service and region, but passwordless authentication is increasingly supported by consumer and enterprise identity providers and major browsers.
