Saivites

Saivites are adherents of Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism. Shaivism centers its worship on the deity Shiva as the supreme being. Followers of Shaivism believe Shiva is the creator, preserver, destroyer, and revealer of all that exists. The core tenets of Shaivism emphasize the worship of Shiva through various means, including devotion, meditation, and rituals.

The concept of Shiva in Shaivism is multifaceted, often depicted as both a fierce ascetic and a benevolent householder. He is associated with cosmic dance, destruction and regeneration, and is considered the lord of yogis and ascetics. Saivites understand Shiva not as a distant god but as the immanent and transcendent reality underlying all existence.

Practices within Shaivism vary widely, reflecting the diverse philosophical schools and regional traditions. Common practices include chanting the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya," performing puja (worship) with offerings like milk, water, and bilva leaves, and observing fasts and festivals dedicated to Shiva, such as Maha Shivaratri. Asceticism is also a significant aspect for some Saivites, with renunciates dedicating their lives to spiritual discipline and meditation. The Shaiva traditions have a rich history, with ancient scriptures like the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Shaiva Agamas forming their theological foundation.
