Saiha

Saiha is a district in the southern part of the Indian state of Mizoram. The district headquarters is the town of Saiha, which serves as the administrative center. Saiha is one of Mizoram’s hill districts and forms part of the region traditionally inhabited by the Mara people.

The district lies in the southern foothills of the Lushai Hills. The terrain is hilly with valleys and forests, and the area experiences a monsoon climate with heavy rainfall in the summer months. Rivers and streams contribute to local agriculture and the landscape.

The population is predominantly inhabited by Mara communities, with Mizo and other groups present in smaller numbers. The Mara language is widely spoken alongside Mizo, and Christianity is the major religion in the district. Traditional crafts and rural village life remain prominent in many communities.

Agriculture is the mainstay, with rice, maize and pulses grown in the terraced fields. Horticulture, forestry and small-scale animal husbandry supplement farm income. The district is connected by road to other parts of Mizoram, and basic public services are centered in Saiha town. The nearest air link is Lengpui Airport near Aizawl; there is no railway line in the state.

As an administrative district, Saiha hosts district offices and basic government services. Educational facilities include primary and secondary schools and colleges affiliated to Mizoram University, serving the local population.
