SaarijärviWiisla

SaarijärviWiisla is a small, unincorporated community located in the northern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is situated in Luce County, approximately twenty miles west of Newberry. The area is characterized by its dense forests, numerous lakes, and rugged terrain, typical of the Lake Superior region.

The community's name is derived from two Finnish words. "Saarijärvi" translates to "island lake," referring to a nearby body of water. "Wiisla" is believed to be a Finnish surname, indicating early settlers in the region. The Finnish heritage of the area is still present in the local culture and history.

Historically, the economy of SaarijärviWiisla was tied to logging and natural resources. The remote location and abundant timber led to the establishment of sawmills and related industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, as the timber industry declined, the community's focus shifted towards recreation and tourism, leveraging the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
