SWAPOs
SWAPO, the South West Africa People’s Organization, is a Namibian political party and former liberation movement that led the struggle against South African rule in South West Africa, the territory now known as Namibia. It was founded in 1960 in Windhoek by Namibian nationalists including Andimba Toivo ya Toivo and Sam Nujoma, established to advance national self-determination and oppose apartheid governance. The organization gradually embraced armed struggle, forming the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), which carried out guerrilla operations from the 1960s into the late 1980s.
Internationally, SWAPO was recognized as the legitimate representative of the Namibian people by the United Nations
Since independence, SWAPO has been the ruling party and has maintained a dominant role in Namibian politics.
