STkäyrien

STkäyrien is a term used in Finnish to describe ST-segment changes observed on an electrocardiogram (ECG). The ST-segment is the portion of the ECG tracing between the end of the QRS complex (ventricular depolarization) and the beginning of the T wave (ventricular repolarization). Deviations of the ST-segment from the baseline, either elevated or depressed, can be significant indicators of cardiac conditions.

ST-segment elevation (ST-segmentin nousu) is often associated with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), particularly transmural infarction. It signifies a complete blockage of a coronary artery, leading to irreversible damage of the heart muscle. The pattern and location of ST elevation can help pinpoint the affected artery. Conversely, ST-segment depression (ST-segmentin lasku) can indicate myocardial ischemia, where the heart muscle is not receiving enough oxygen but the damage may not be transmural. It can also be caused by other conditions such as digoxin toxicity, electrolyte imbalances, or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

The interpretation of STkäyrien requires careful consideration of the patient's clinical presentation, medical history, and other ECG findings. A single ECG tracing showing abnormal STkäyrien may not be definitive, and serial ECGs are often necessary to assess changes over time. The presence and morphology of STkäyrien are critical components in the diagnosis and management of various cardiovascular emergencies.
