SSHtunnling

SSHtunnling, often referred to as SSH tunneling or SSH port forwarding, is a method of creating encrypted connections between a local computer and a remote machine using the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol. This technique allows for secure transmission of data that would otherwise be unencrypted. It essentially creates a secure pathway through an insecure network.

There are three primary types of SSH tunneling: local, remote, and dynamic. Local port forwarding is used to forward a port on the local machine to a port on the remote machine. This is useful for accessing services on a remote network that are not directly exposed to the internet. Remote port forwarding allows a port on the remote machine to be forwarded to a port on the local machine. This can be used to make a local service accessible from the remote network. Dynamic port forwarding, also known as SOCKS proxy, creates a SOCKS proxy on the local machine that forwards traffic through the SSH server. This is commonly used to tunnel all of a device's network traffic, effectively browsing the internet securely through the remote server.

SSHtunnling offers several advantages. It provides robust encryption, protecting sensitive data from eavesdropping. It can bypass firewalls by tunneling traffic through an allowed SSH port. It also allows for secure access to internal network resources from external locations. Common use cases include securing unencrypted protocols like VNC or FTP, accessing web applications hosted on a private network, and anonymizing internet browsing by routing traffic through a trusted server. Implementing SSH tunnels typically involves configuring SSH client software with specific port forwarding options.
