SPECfp92

SPECfp92 is a benchmark suite developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) designed to measure the floating-point performance of computer systems. It was one of the earliest widely adopted floating-point benchmarks and served as a predecessor to later SPEC benchmarks like SPECfp95, SPECfp2000, and subsequent versions.

The SPECfp92 suite consists of a collection of programs that represent typical floating-point computations encountered in scientific and engineering applications. These programs cover a range of algorithms and problem sizes, including tasks such as computational fluid dynamics, structural analysis, signal processing, and mathematical simulations. The benchmark measures the time it takes for each program to complete its execution, and these times are then used to derive a performance score.

The SPECfp92 score is calculated by normalizing the execution times of the individual benchmark programs against a reference system. A higher SPECfp92 score indicates better floating-point performance. This benchmark was instrumental in allowing users and manufacturers to compare the floating-point capabilities of different processors and systems in a standardized way. While superseded by newer SPEC benchmarks, SPECfp92 remains historically significant for its role in establishing performance evaluation standards for floating-point computing.
