SKUers

SKUers is a term used to describe the people, teams, or software responsible for creating, managing, and optimizing stock-keeping units (SKUs) within a product catalog. SKUs are unique alphanumeric identifiers assigned to individual products or product variants by retailers and manufacturers to distinguish items by attributes such as size, color, style, or model. While SKUs are unique within a given catalog, they are not standardized across different organizations.

The core responsibilities of SKUers include designing and enforcing SKU naming conventions, assigning new SKUs, and maintaining accurate attribute data linked to each SKU. They manage SKU hierarchies and variant relationships, ensure data quality and deduplication, and map SKUs to related product information such as descriptions, prices, suppliers, images, and specifications. SKUers also coordinate with enterprise systems like ERP, point-of-sale, and e-commerce platforms, and oversee processes like SKU rationalization to reduce unnecessary proliferation.

Common practices involve maintaining consistent data governance, aligning SKUs across channels (online, in-store, catalogs), and integrating SKU data with catalogs, pricing, and promotions. They may also handle barcode and GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) integration, which supports physical scanning and external identification, while recognizing that SKUs themselves remain retailer-specific identifiers.

Significance and outcomes rely on accurate SKU data to enable precise inventory control, pricing, promotions, demand forecasting, and analytics at the item level. Effective SKU management supports omnichannel fulfillment, operational efficiency, and clearer product analytics.
