SIMswaphyökkäykset, also known as SIM swapping or SIM hijacking, are a type of cybercrime that involves tricking a mobile carrier into transferring a victim's phone number to a SIM card controlled by the attacker. This is typically achieved by impersonating the victim and convincing the carrier's customer service representative that the attacker is the legitimate owner of the phone number. Once the attacker gains control of the phone number, they can intercept calls and text messages, including those containing one-time passwords (OTPs) used for account verification.

The primary goal of a SIM swap attack is to gain unauthorized access to the victim's online accounts. This is particularly effective for accounts that rely on SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA). By intercepting OTPs, attackers can bypass these security measures and reset passwords, effectively taking over email accounts, social media profiles, banking services, and cryptocurrency wallets. The consequences for the victim can include financial loss, identity theft, and reputational damage.

Preventing SIM swap attacks involves several security practices. Users should enable strong, unique passwords for all their online accounts and opt for app-based authenticator codes or hardware security keys for 2FA whenever possible, rather than SMS-based codes. It is also advisable to set up a security PIN or a passphrase with your mobile carrier to prevent unauthorized SIM changes. Being vigilant about phishing attempts and immediately reporting any suspicious activity related to your phone number or accounts can also help mitigate the risk.
