SIGMORPHON

SIGMORPHON is a Special Interest Group within the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) dedicated to the study and processing of morphology in natural language. It focuses on computational approaches to morphologically rich languages, including inflection, derivation, segmentation, and morphophonology, with attention to typologically diverse and low-resource languages. The group supports a recurring workshop series, typically held in conjunction with major NLP conferences such as ACL, and its proceedings are published in the ACL Anthology.

A core feature of SIGMORPHON is its emphasis on shared tasks and benchmarks related to morphology, especially morphological reinflection and related generation and analysis tasks. These challenges provide standardized datasets and evaluation frameworks that enable cross-language comparisons and the assessment of morphology-aware NLP models. Beyond shared tasks, SIGMORPHON develops and curates data resources, guidelines, and evaluation metrics that facilitate multilingual morphology research and reproducibility.

Researchers from linguistics, computer science, and language technology participate in SIGMORPHON activities, with work spanning supervised and semi-supervised learning, neural sequence models, typological analysis, and applications to low-resource languages. The community also contributes to open resources for morphological datasets and tools that support linguistic analysis and generation.

Through its workshop activities, datasets, and open resources, SIGMORPHON aims to advance automatic language processing for morphologically structured languages while promoting rigorous evaluation, collaboration, and cross-linguistic understanding in morphology research.
