SAR technologies refer to the systems and tools used to locate and rescue persons in distress across maritime, aviation, and land-based environments. They aim to shorten response times, improve location accuracy, and enable safe and effective rescue operations. The field encompasses sensing, communications, robotics, and information management technologies that are integrated into coordinated emergency response.

Key components include locating signals and imaging. Distress beacons such as EPIRBs, PLBs, and emergency position-indicating devices emit signals that aid rescue teams in finding individuals. Radar, sonar, and visual imaging (including infrared and thermal sensors) help identify targets in challenging weather or terrain. Unmanned systems, notably drones (UAS), extend search capability over large areas with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, and LiDAR. Satellite systems provide geographic imagery, weather data, and relay communications when terrestrial networks are compromised.

Underwater and robotic systems also play a role. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) assist in searches below the surface or in submerged environments where human access is limited. In addition, GNSS, GIS, and leveling and mapping software support precise positioning, route planning, and incident management.

Coordination and interoperability are central to SAR technologies. Standardized communication protocols, incident command systems, and cross-agency data sharing enable effective multi-agency responses. Training and exercise programs simulate scenarios to validate technology effectiveness and team readiness.

Challenges include harsh operating conditions, data integration, false positives, and budget constraints. Ongoing research focuses on sensor fusion, autonomous decision-making, and robust, accessible equipment to improve outcomes in diverse environments.
