SARroutes

SARroutes are standardized paths published to support search and rescue operations for both airborne and seaborne distress events. They define a network of waypoints, coordinates, and associated procedures intended to improve coverage, reduce response times, and facilitate the rapid allocation of assets such as aircraft, ships, and drones. SARroutes are established by national rescue authorities, coast guards, and aviation or maritime authorities, and they are supported by international bodies to promote cross-border cooperation.

In aviation, SARroutes may be integrated with regional airspace structures and published in aeronautical information publications, charts, and notices to airmen. In maritime contexts, they are coordinated by maritime rescue coordination centers and reflect established search patterns, surveillance coverage, and communication protocols. The routes include reporting points, recommended altitudes or speeds where applicable, and contingencies for weather, sea state, or navigational hazards.

Activation and use: when a distress alert is received, the responsible RCC or MRCC assigns responders to follow the SARroutes and to execute prescribed search patterns while coordinating with other assets. The routes are designed to be flexible enough to adapt to the size of the search area and evolving conditions, while maintaining predictable response times and interoperability among responding units.

Publication and maintenance: SARroutes are published in national SAR guidelines, aviation and maritime safety publications, and digital platforms. They are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect changes in technology, traffic, geography, or hazard assessments.
