Säilivuskuupäev, commonly known as an expiry date or best-before date, is a crucial piece of information found on packaged food products and some other consumer goods. It indicates the period during which the manufacturer guarantees the product will remain at its optimal quality. This quality can refer to taste, texture, nutritional value, and aroma. It is important to distinguish between "best before" and "use by" dates, although they are often translated similarly.

The "best before" date is primarily about quality. After this date, the product may still be safe to consume, but its sensory characteristics might have diminished. For instance, a biscuit might become less crispy or a jam might lose some of its vibrant color. The food manufacturer is not legally obligated to withdraw products from sale once this date has passed, though many retailers choose to do so. Consumers can often exercise their own judgment regarding the suitability of consuming products past their best before date, considering factors like storage conditions and visual/olfactory inspection.

In contrast, a "use by" date, typically found on highly perishable foods like fresh meat, fish, and dairy, signifies a safety deadline. Consuming these products after the "use by" date can pose a health risk due to potential bacterial growth. These items should not be consumed after their expiry date, regardless of appearance. Retailers are generally required to remove products past their "use by" date from shelves. Proper storage, as indicated on the packaging, is essential for ensuring products reach their indicated säilivuskuupäev.
