Röstmeddelande, often translated as voicemail or voice message, is a telecommunication system that allows a caller to leave an audio message for the recipient when they are unavailable to answer the phone. This system is typically integrated into a telephone network or a private branch exchange (PBX). When a call is made and the recipient does not answer, the call can be routed to a voicemail system.

The caller is usually greeted with an automated prompt indicating that the recipient is unavailable and inviting them to leave a message. The caller can then record their message using their own voice. Once the message is complete, the caller can choose to send it, replay it, or re-record it. The voicemail system then stores the message for the recipient.

Recipients can access their stored voicemails by dialing into their voicemail system, often using a specific code or number. They can then listen to, delete, save, or reply to the messages. Voicemail has become a standard feature in most modern telephone systems, serving as a crucial communication tool in both personal and professional contexts, ensuring that messages are not lost even when direct contact is not possible.
