Röntgenilækningar

Röntgenilækningar, also known as X-ray therapy or orthovoltage therapy, is a form of radiation therapy that uses X-rays to treat various medical conditions. This technique was one of the earliest forms of radiation therapy developed, emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shortly after the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Röntgen.

The principle behind röntgenilækningar involves directing a beam of X-rays at a specific area of the body. These X-rays have enough energy to damage the DNA of rapidly dividing cells, such as cancer cells, hindering their growth and proliferation. While also affecting healthy cells, the dosage is carefully controlled and aimed to minimize damage to surrounding tissues, often by targeting the affected area precisely.

Historically, röntgenilækningar was used for a wide range of conditions, including superficial tumors, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and even some inflammatory disorders. Its relatively low penetration depth meant it was primarily effective for treating conditions located close to the surface of the body.

As technology advanced, more sophisticated radiation therapy techniques emerged, such as linear accelerators that produce higher-energy photons and electrons, and more precise methods like intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). These newer modalities often offer better targeting, deeper penetration, and improved sparing of healthy tissues compared to traditional röntgenilækningar. Consequently, the use of orthovoltage therapy has declined significantly in many clinical settings, though it may still be employed in specific niche applications or in regions where advanced equipment is not readily available.
