Räkat
Räkat is a Swedish word that translates to "shrimp" in English. It is a common term used in Sweden to refer to various types of small, edible crustaceans belonging to the Decapoda order. These are typically marine animals, though some species inhabit freshwater environments. In Swedish cuisine, räkor are highly popular and are prepared and consumed in numerous ways. They are often served as a topping on open-faced sandwiches called "smörgås," particularly with dill, mayonnaise, and lemon. Räkor are also a staple ingredient in seafood salads, pasta dishes, and can be enjoyed simply boiled and peeled with a dipping sauce. The most commonly consumed type in Sweden is the small, pinkish-orange shrimp, often referred to as "småräkor." Larger varieties, known as "storräkor," are also available and are frequently grilled or used in more substantial seafood preparations. The fishing and consumption of räkor are significant aspects of Swedish coastal culture and culinary tradition.
