Räjäytysaineet, known in English as explosives, are substances or devices that can undergo a rapid chemical reaction, producing a large volume of gas and a significant amount of energy in a short period. This rapid expansion of gas creates a shock wave, which is the basis for their destructive or propulsive effects. Explosives are broadly categorized into two main types: high explosives and low explosives.

High explosives detonate, meaning the reaction propagates through the material at supersonic speeds, creating a powerful blast wave. Examples include TNT (trinitrotoluene), dynamite, and C4. These are typically used in mining, demolition, and military applications for their shattering and heaving power.

Low explosives deflagrate, where the reaction propagates at subsonic speeds, producing a rapid burning rather than a detonation. Gunpowder is a classic example of a low explosive. They are commonly used as propellants in firearms and fireworks, where a sustained push rather than an instantaneous shock is desired.

The production, storage, and use of explosives are highly regulated due to their inherent dangers. Safety protocols are paramount, and specialized training is required for anyone handling these materials. International and national laws govern their trade and application to prevent misuse.
