Räjähdysmekanismin refers to the process and sequence of events that lead to an explosion. It encompasses the physical and chemical principles that cause a rapid release of energy, typically in the form of heat, light, sound, and a pressure wave. This mechanism is fundamental to understanding various explosive phenomena, from the detonation of high explosives to the rapid combustion of flammable materials.

The core of most explosion mechanisms involves a substance undergoing a very rapid exothermic chemical reaction or a rapid phase transition. In chemical explosions, this often involves the rapid oxidation of a fuel by an oxidizer. The reaction produces a large volume of hot gases, which expand extremely quickly, creating a shock wave. The speed of the reaction is critical; if it occurs too slowly, it may result in deflagration (burning) rather than detonation. Detonation, a supersonic combustion or decomposition wave, is characteristic of high explosives and involves a self-propagating shock wave that triggers the explosive decomposition ahead of it.

Physical explosions, on the other hand, do not necessarily involve a chemical reaction. Examples include the rupture of a container holding a pressurized gas or liquid, or a steam explosion caused by superheated water coming into contact with a much cooler substance. In these cases, the rapid release of stored potential energy drives the explosive event.
