Ryhmäjaottelua

Ryhmäjaottelua, also known as clustering, is a method of unsupervised machine learning used to group similar data points together. It is a fundamental technique in data analysis and pattern recognition, where the goal is to partition a dataset into subsets or clusters, such that data points within the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters. This process is particularly useful in exploratory data analysis, image segmentation, market research, and bioinformatics, among other fields.

The primary objective of ryhmäjaottelua is to identify natural groupings within the data without prior knowledge of the class labels. The algorithm used for clustering can vary, but common methods include k-means clustering, hierarchical clustering, and DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise). Each method has its own assumptions and is suited to different types of data and problems.

In k-means clustering, for example, the number of clusters k is specified beforehand, and the algorithm iteratively assigns data points to the nearest cluster centroid and updates the centroids based on the mean of the points in the cluster. Hierarchical clustering, on the other hand, builds a tree of clusters, either by merging the closest pairs of clusters (agglomerative) or by splitting clusters (divisive).

The quality of a clustering result can be evaluated using various metrics, such as the silhouette score, which measures how similar a data point is to its own cluster compared to other clusters. The choice of clustering algorithm and parameters depends on the specific characteristics of the data and the research question at hand.
