This concept is fundamental in computer graphics and user interface design, referring to the process by which the visual content displayed on a screen is refreshed or redrawn. In essence, whenever an application or the operating system needs to change what is shown on the monitor, a screen update occurs.

This updating can be triggered by various events. For instance, moving a window, typing text, playing a video, or even the passage of time can necessitate a screen update. The frequency of these updates is measured in Hertz (Hz) and is commonly referred to as the refresh rate. A higher refresh rate means the screen is updated more often per second, resulting in smoother motion and a more fluid visual experience, particularly noticeable in gaming and video playback.

The process of screen updating involves the graphics processing unit (GPU) and the display controller. The GPU renders the new frame, and the display controller then signals the monitor to refresh its image based on this new data.
