Rustokerroksets is a geological term referring to a specific type of sedimentary rock formation. These formations are characterized by layers of sandstone interspersed with significant deposits of iron oxide. The name itself is derived from the Swedish words "rost," meaning rust, and "kerrokset," meaning layers, directly describing their visual appearance. The iron oxide content, often in the form of hematite or limonite, gives the sandstone a distinctive reddish-brown to dark brown color.

The formation of rustokerroksets typically occurs in ancient riverbeds or coastal environments where iron-rich groundwater percolates through porous sandstone. Over geological time, the iron precipitates out of the water, cementing the sand grains together and coloring the rock. These formations are often found in association with iron ore deposits, though they are not typically mined for iron themselves due to the relatively low concentration of the metal.
