The content of runolaulu often revolved around mythological themes, epic narratives, shamanistic practices, daily life, love, and historical events. The most famous collection of these songs is Elias Lönnrot's Kalevala, compiled in the 19th century from various oral sources. While the Kalevala brought the runo song tradition to international attention, the living tradition began to decline with the rise of literacy and other forms of entertainment.
